Tater Tots (or, to us Australians, 'Potato Gems') are a nostalgic favourite. But they're more than a delicious throwback to simple childhood dinners. These little nuggets of potato happiness are a common sight in household freezers, being called upon as sides for American-style barbecues, lazy Sunday night dinners and, of course, those essential late-night post-bar snacks.
With a little innovation, though, tots can be much more than just mini hashbrowns. By stuffing them in a waffle iron, for example, you create a giant, crispy, delicious potato surface on which to throw burger patties, fried chicken, cheese or any number of other toppings.
I call them 'TotWaffles', and they're the sign you've been waiting for that you need to own a waffle iron.
